Church Street Triangle

Church Street is a street of two halves. Our proposals seek to mend it by reinforcing its common ground.

The eastern section, dubbed the Antiques Quarter, is characterised by handsome Victorian terraces and carefully curated shop displays. Alfies Antique Market is a destination of international significance and an important employment provider. Just down the street, the western section is defined by post-war development with retail units on the ground floor and homes above. Here, one of London’s oldest street markets provides affordable produce and convenience goods for local people in an area with profound income deprivation.

The Church Street Triangle sits at the junction between the Antiques Quarter and Church Street market. This public square is flanked in the north by small shops, in the east by a partially disused mock Tudor toilet block and in the south by a number of market stalls selling food at lunchtime.

Our proposals for the Church Street Triangle represent the first phases of a wider regeneration programme by Westminster Council. JKA were commissioned in 2018 to collaborate with local people, including residents, market traders and retailers, to prepare a regeneration strategy for the Triangle. Interviews, workshops and public events generated a suite of complementary actions which to overcome the divide by building on the common ground between the two halves of the street.

These proposals received funding from the Mayor of London in 2019, and JKA subsequently won the commission to implement the project. We are now working on detailed designs for public space improvements, including multi-functional street furniture, the new spaces for community enterprise within vacant retail units and a new café with public toilets to support social life on the Triangle.
